About Dr. Freeman-Coppadge

I am a licensed counseling psychologist in the states of Delaware and Maryland. I have the Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT) and can  practice telepsychology under the authority of PSYPACT in PSYPACT participating states (see here for a list of current PSYPACT participating states: https://www.psypact.org/psypactmap).

Additionally, I am a board certified psychiatric clinical pharmacist. I have been working in mental health since 2005.

What I Do

As a therapist, I work with you by engaging in meaningful introspection; exploring your various identities, roles, and place in larger systems; and delving into those sometimes overwhelming emotions that leave you convinced that you are powerless to your circumstances.

Populations

Congruence offers services for people in over 30 states via telehealth (see eligible states here). In-person services are available for those in the eastern Sussex County area of Delaware (Lewes, Rehoboth, Bethany, etc.) and the greater Baltimore-Annapolis metro area. Sessions occurring via telehealth use videoconferencing technology on a secure platform (SimplePractice).

I do individual, couples, and group therapy with adults of all ages who are dealing with issues like depression and other mood struggles, anxiety, adjustment concerns, relationship and interpersonal problems, and identity-based stressors. I have a special place in my heart for LGBTQ+ people, those dealing with multicultural issues and/or identity conflicts, and emerging adults.

Therapeutic Style

My therapeutic style is integrative, drawing primarily from evidence-based treatments like emotion-focused and relational/interpersonal approaches, but I also incorporate insight-oriented psychodynamic theories, acceptance and commitment (ACT) techniques, and narrative therapy into my work, all within a social justice framework.

Most importantly, you will find me to be easy-going and informal so that you feel safe, unpressured, and able to pursue your goals on your terms and in your time. I strongly believe in the healing power of humor, so my colleagues will attest to how often laughter can be heard coming from my office.

Education

I graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a BS in Biochemistry (Spanish minor) in 2001. I then completed my PharmD (2005) and a residency in psychiatric pharmacy practice (2007) at the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Pharmacy.

I earned my PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2018 after completing a year of internship at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Center for Counseling and Psychological Health.

Professional Experience

As a board certified psychiatric clinical pharmacist, I worked in the state hospital system for three years consulting with multidisciplinary teams on the treatment of patients with severe mental health challenges, and later worked for a few years in managed care.

As a psychologist, I have had experience in several university counseling centers doing individual and group therapy, outreach and collaboration, and crisis management. I have competence in LGBQ+ psychotherapy and am a trans/non-binary ally. I continue to teach, write, and speak on areas of clinical interest to me, including identity development and conflict, LGBTQ+ issues, and psychopharmacology.

I am an active member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists (AAPP). Within APA, I am active within Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology) and Division 44 (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity).
